It is barbaric to deprive people of freedom. 20 years in jail is unethical and absolutely inhuman. How can we expect criminals to be better humans if they are in prison for over 20 years,

5 YEARS for ANY CRIME!! You have got to be kidding! There are those that do not belong in society period! If the clowns that go around pulling armed robbery thought that all they could get was a maximum of 5 years, they would be more prone to not leaving any witnesses. The murder rate would go crazy! The punishment must fit the crime.

I disagree with you. Personally I feel it depends on the crime. There are many things out there that I disgree in the judicial system, but I agree with some things. If a person rapes a child, I feel they should get more than 5 years. If a person has a substance abuse problem, I feel they should be allowed to go to rehabilitation for a chance before being locked up.

I also disgree with many of the ways prison are running things. Many tax payer's money is being misused by the government. Most of the time the Inmate's family are paying to keep him/her there and the state pays the inmate to be there. Does that make sense? No.

Uh, I don't expect criminals to be better humans. They are CRIMINALS. It sounds like ANIMALS for a reason. And don't you think it is barbaric to deprive people of their safety, security, property, and lives just so that you feel better about how you treat a criminal? Yes, lets only keep child molesters and murderers locked up for five years, that'll teach 'em! Puh-lease.

It may be barbaric to deprive people of their freedoms but don't you think it is barbaric for a person to rape and kill children? How could we as a society let that go unpunished? Why would we let somebody that would do such a heinous thing walk around free?

If you are going to limit the longest prison sentence to 5 years, no matter how heinous the crime, I think it will cause more people to support the death penalty for a wide variety of crimes that are not eligible at present. Many people already think only 20 years is unacceptable for child molesters.

it's also barbaric to axe your wife and children to death in their sleep. some people can't be expected to be better human beings, which is probably why they have been sentenced to prison terms of that length of time. i advocate the death penalty in some situations, so, i guess i sort of agree with you, if they have committed a crime to get that much prison time they should be put to death and not left for tax payers to pay more money per year to keep them incarcerated than they probably would have earned for themselves on the outside.

Why should a murderer or rapist be treated humanely? I believe that if you act like an animal, you lose your human rights. I think the prison system should be changed. Instead of locking people in prison, we lock them in a huge fenced in area in the wild. No food, no medical, no bed to sleep in, and no roof over their head. Just put them in the wild and let them survive on their own.

Act like an animal - get treated like one

Dear Maddy,

As if the only purpose of punishment is rehabilitation? I would say that rehabilitation is only one of the purposes of punishment, and a smaller part of the overall scheme.
