I'm using ALL "free and clear" as a detergent, but I'm looking for a fabric softener to go along with it that is hypoallergenic and fragrance free...

I like the liquid Downy Free and Sensitive (white bottle). I've been using it since my first son was born, almost 2.5 years ago, and so far it hasn't broken either him or his little brother out. Works like regular Downy, but without the scent.

I asked my pediatritian the same thing, and she said fabric softener will only irritate baby's skin more.

It's because all fabric softeners have dyes and fragrances in them. Dreft is actually not even recommended because it also has a fragrance in it.

If you're using All free and clear, that's a good one. But I've looked, and I've found no fabric softeners that don't have dyes or fragrances. They all have fragrances in them! I wish they made one that didn't, because baby clothes don't come out real soft without a fabric softener..... I guess my pediatrician was right!

Typically all fabric softener interferes with the baby clothes being fire retardant. I'm not sure of natural ones though. Good for you!!! I know that with my cloth diapers I get them clean with a natural detergent. NO fabric softeners.

Try adding vinegar to the rinse cycle. It works GREAT as a fabric softner, and it helps remove soap & softner residue that lingers, which 'wears out' clothing faster. It's also not an alergen, so it won't irritate the babies skin. And no, if you add the right amount, it will NOT smell like vinegar when you are done washing the clothing. They smell clean. Lingering residues (such as smoke) disappear. I add roughly the same amount of vinegar as I would softner.

anytime you use these products there is a risk of causing allergies or asthema..

we would all do our kids a big favor by using fewer chemicals in our homes.. fabric softener is one such product...sprays to kill "germs" are even worse - because think about it... what would you rather have a kid put in his mouth?? a toy with germs (For which our bodies are naturally prepared for) or a toy with harsh chemicals that are possibly cancer causing in the long run?

i use the dyer sheets.. thats better for the clothes and that way it wont stick to everything.

you can use any kind of laundry detergent for baby's clothes. it doesnt really matter.
