She can't lay eggs with out him. Coincidentally I just seen this on TV last night. The male makes this nest out of bubbles that he blows and then he grabs her and fertilizes her and then the eggs start coming out. He then grabs the eggs with his mouth and puts them up into the bubbles. 2 days later the eggs hatch out into little fishies.

She wont lay eggs without a male. But don't just go get a male - breeding bettas takes some special care. Just tossed in together a male can kill a female and taking care and rearing youn takes a lot of work and space for growing bettas. She will absorb the eggs with no harm and be fine.

With bettas the male builds a bubble nest, then clasps the female under it and squeezes the eggs out. Eggs are fertilized externally, and healthy betta females generally always have eggs. (See link for betta porn) As far as the digging some bettas seem like to dig. She might be just bored, or you might try giving her a resting palce that hides her from above. Like males she might benefit from some occasional mirror time.

the female needs the male in order to have babies, so go and buy a new male if it is baby bettas that you want.
