Why do you think it is more challenging to motivate a group of people than it is to motivate a single individual? If you were placed in charge of a group or are currently in charge of one, which type of power(expert, legitimate, coerive, referent or reward) would you think works best in motivating a group? Why?

It' more challenging to motivate a group because you have lot of different people that make up the group- you have all types of personalities and different things that work. When you want to motivate a group- its making sure that people know-- it's a team effort-- something that is achieved together. That's the first thing--
Second-- you want to acknowledge each and every person and appreciate thier talent-- and what they can bring to the group-- in a group you want to make people use thier best skills and by combining people-- you get a gathered strong force-- which is motivated.
The best is rewarding the team for its efforts-- but always make sure that you understand the individuality of each person in the team. If you can motivate each and every person--- then the group overall is motivated.
Otherwise- everyone in the group needs a common goal. When there is something common to all people in the group- it is easy to motivate the group-- by linking them together through their common idea, goal, characteristic, hobby-- whatever.

The key of motivating a group- is first uniting it in someway and then using everyone in the group as a special and essential part.

I'd use reward but not necessarily in the monetary sense but maybe that of recognition in front of the group. This would validate an individual without threatening others in the group. example: "The XYZ Account was a success largely due to Amanda's efforts to finalize the campaign on time." Many others may have had an equal effort in the project, but Amanda was key and should be acknowledged by her superiors and her peers.
