first time we are using a gas stove, does the oven heat up much quicker and stay hotter longer than an electric stove? Seems like the top gets hot... any advice??

Your observations are dead-on target -- gas stoves DO heat up more quickly and they tend to stay hotter longer than electric stoves. Don't worry; it's normal, and if it's a new stove you don't have to worry about the oven temperature being accurate (it is). You may find, like I do, that you may have to set the oven temperature below the recommending cooking temperature, or you may have to shorten the cooking time (or both). As for the top of the stove getting hot, that's also normal. Just be careful about leaving stuff that might melt or catch on fire on top of the stove. One thing you can do is soften butter or margarine on top of the stove when you're using the oven. Just put it on a non-plastic tray and let it sit behind the back burners for 20-30 minutes and it's good to go. Very handy if you need to soften butter or margarine quickly without melting it.

I dont know if it stays hotter longer but it definitly heats up quicker, The main thing to remember is there is no heating element at the top like in an electric oven, so you may have to adjust you racks accordingly, depending on the dish.
