Sand Ant

Well ants dont actually go elsewhere to get the sand. The sand that you see on the outside of an ant hill is what has been excavated for the tunnels they make below ground. In order to make tunnels underground, they have to remove the sand that they dig through. The only place they can put excess sand is on the outside of the hill.........thus it piles up and is visible........

They don't buy or create sand. The ant hills are caused by the worker ants removing the sand from the ground so that they can build tunnels. So basically, ant hills are just leftover sand from the ground.

It's all the stuff the move as they dig their tunnels underground. In order to not just move a hole from place to place, they form a tunnel by taking all the debris to the entrance to the hive and dropping it.

The particles may not even be sand (which is silicon dioxide), but the normal soil that may be clumped with some ant saliva or something to make it stay as those little granules.
