I wouldn't bet on it. The US soccer stars are average players if they go to a European FC. For example, Landon Donavon in say England or Portugal might not even be a starter. What we need to do for the US to make some noise in the WC is to send our stars to European clubs like Arsenal and Inter. They will be more expierenced with European play and might figure something out and eventually go to the WC finals. If they don't do that, forget even the quarterfinals! Europe is sending tons of prospects to US to become NBA and NHL stars. 1 great example is Dirk Nowitski, he's from Germany. The Cleveland Caveilers center is pretty good, he's also from Europe. Or Alexander Ovechkin, the new Washington Capitols star from Russia. and the NBA Draft is a godd example too. There were so many prospects from Europe including number 1 pick, he was from Italy.

The US soccer team already did. They won the '91 and the '99 World Cup.

... ok that were the women.

But if the rumours are true that South Africa will lose the 2010 Cup and it will be hosted in the US and if someone like Jürgen Klinsmann, who can push a team to its limit, becomes US coach and if they get a fair share of luck in the tournament, then why not.
Lots of if's!!!! So I wouldn't bet too much money on it.

The USA have been in the finals several times. They have a proud history there - first appearance in 1930 (where they reached the semi-finals - still their best performance), but also in 1934, 1950 (where they beat England), and all tournaments from 1990 to present.

It's hard to say now because we don't have a coach. If we do get a good coach and some better players, I think the US team could make another run.

Not any time soon. When the US boasts about their "superstars" and they don't show up, its a long road to get to past the group stage.
Maybe if Klinsmann becomes Head Coach, he can turn things around for the US.

Not until the sport becomes more mainstream in America. It's getting there but keep it mind it wasn't even played at most schools 40 years ago.
