Just last week Yahoo and MSN (<-hotmail) allowed connection.
Yahoo and MSN can chat with each other.
There are talks of in the future of connecting with Google and mabye IRC as well.
Too bad AOL/ AIM no body wants to talk to you....AAAAAAAhhhhhhhh...... Ha Ha ha!!!
AOL contains too much spyware so other vendors don't trust them.
I have always advised people to drop AOL / AIM and there "CRAP/SPYware"

There are couple of messenger which claim to work like trillian but none worked foe me ever. So you have to wait and watch till something like that comes up...

Yes, they can use webmessenger. You don't have to download it, it's web-based.
It limits what you can do, but you can still talk to your friends.
go to www.messenger.yahoo.com and scroll to the bottom. There is a small link that says "web messenger"
