in the movies, people have a machine that's usually in New York or US in general, but when they time travel, they end up in Medieval France or Mongolia.
Now the question is if, for example, in reality, you can time travel but not move in absolute space, what would happen to you, even if you travel even just 5 minutes back or forth in time?

10 points for the best explanation.

Well... You would actually most likely be in the middle of space..... not exactly what I would want.

Never forget, we are always moving. Earth spinning and orbiting sun, sun orbiting center of galaxy and the galaxy flying outward. Kinda amazin when u think about it.

The idea is that when you time travel, the other thing remain constant. Gravity for example. And your motion on earth. See, we are actually always travelling in time. Forwards, I mean. So that, theoreticallly backward time travel should be similar.

So, how come, when we travel back in time from US, we end up on the titanic? Simple. The gargoyle place we start out from is not interesting. So the movie makers have to place us in barrels across the niagra, in the middle of pharaoh's army or among the most plastic dinosaurs (though the last could've been where you were standing).

OK, if you could time travel, you would in essence be in a bubble of your time and space, completely independent of the rest of the world or universe around you. they would continue at an accelerated rate, and you would stay stationary. when you stopped, you would be in a different place simply because the earth is spinning. if you went on long enough, the earth might have left you behind, and you would be in space. However, time it right, and you could end up stopping at the exact time the earth is back where you started, and you just went a year forward in time. But, it would take some pretty good skills to land that one.

it you traveled in time ONLY for say 5 minutes, you would probably sink into the earth and reappear there (underground). if you waited long enough before reappearing (i.e. travelled a sufficient amount of time) you'd end up in space behind the earth as it travelled in its orbit. and if you travelled a REALLY long time, the universe would be expanding around you and the galaxies (including the milky way) would move around you. you'd end up in interplanetary space. and i think it's safe to say that you'd be in trouble then :)

I don't think the atoms and molecules in your body would be very happy about that. We're talking gonzo nuclear energies here. Big Bang type energies. Theoretical quantum weirdness. Antimatter stuff. Beam me up Scotty.
