No not at all. Historians require a lot of proof before they can say if an occurrence or a theory was highly likely or factual. They will require sound primary source evidence ideally to back up a notion. There is a lot of theoretical talk within the study of history but this is not hearsay. It's simply Historians stating probable ideas and theories where either sound evidence is lacking or has been lost altogether to antiquity. You must remember that Historians today are required to have expert background knowledge of the era or subject they research and they are also open to questions and criticism from their own colleagues should their theories be found lacking.

Though it has been strongly suggested that history is written by the victors, the last 20 years could perhaps have a greater deal of non-fiction validity thanks to still & video cameras.

Before cameras, history was pieced together on supposed witness accounts-- who most likely had a few years to embelish their memories unintencially.

With video footage and 24/hour news, history is being documented much more accurately-- but there's still some fiction now and then to fill the gaps. I wouldn't trust history to approxiamate outside the 20th and 21st centuries.
