Simply nothing can beat Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart. A brilliant song written and sung by an incredibly good singer (Ian Curtis), full of energy but soothing, highly personal to the band and a song which all indie bands cite as an influence on their own music. It still sounds as though it was released recently, even 26 years after its original release.

wow - yes there are som many but imagine by john lennon seems to be at the top of most music polls so that must surely say something about it and such beautiful lyrics..
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

I agree for Imagine by John Lennon.
From the contextual songs... I like Point of No Return (from the Phantom of the Opera) and Maybe This Time (from Cabaret). Very strong in the situations they are located.

Very possibly "Jonathan Toledo" by The Toll (1989) - great song decrying the atrocities carried out by The White Man on the native Americans.

Err id have to say "under the bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, not the shitty All Saints cover (pukes)
the Chilis version got me into the Chilis, which got me into rock in general, which made me who i am now, so i owe that song a canny bit lol
:D
