In Europe they call them Chips and in the US we call them french or freedom fries. Europeans drive on the left side of the road and American on the right. Our car steering are also put on the other side...would it not be cheaper if all cars were made the same. Even our English language is totally differnt from the British English. ex. centre and center...why Why do us americans have to change or do everything differently? We do everything just to stand out.

First of all, what's wrong with standing out. The first American settlers coming from England were coming here to make a new and better life for themselves. They discovered that Brittans rule was becoming quite annoying, considering communication with the "Mother Land" was few and far between, and that their potential to strive as a New Nation was being restriced. So, starting an American tradition of rebelling and making a stand for what the masses believe in began. So as for the point of all the differences in language flavors or flavours if you wish, the english language is a massive melting pot of history, heritage and creativity of many cultures, not just us modern day Americans. To answer your car question, most vehicles are made for their respective countries of destination. Being cheaper or more expensive to produce by only making either "right hand drive" or "left hand drive" I dont know, but there are numerous Government regulations for all countries that you would also have to include in the "making them the same" scenario. Just look at Australias standards and compare them to the U.S. and I think you'll find many differences and some similarities as well.

Not all Europeans drive on the left side of the road or have steering columns on the left.

As for the differences in language, some of the spelling differences were deliberately encouraged by Benjamin Franklin and others of the founding generation to help make Americans different. Others simply developed over time as a part of the natural course, just as differences in usage and pronunciation have developed between the regions of the United States.

Our differences are part of the spice of life. Life would be excruciatingly boring in everyone were alike.

Languages evolve over time. American English is a mix of a lot of other cultures. We came to America as pilgrims from England. We didn't want what we had there, we wanted something new and built our economy and culture accordingly.

By the way, why aren't vaccuum bags or coffee filters made in a universal size? There are lots of artitrary dumb things in life.

Its not the Americans that change the words and the way of life for other country's .Some English words dont make any sense when u translate to a other languages so the peoples from that foreign country they make their own words that makes sense , its the way of living in that country example : in America they say gas to gasoline , in Romania they say benzine to gasoline because they use butane gas in their cars also and they cal that gas , like me i come from USA and i ask a guy where i could put gas 9 benzine ) in my car and he send me to a station that they only serve gas propane so it cause confusion

Why do you feel we would have to change our vocabulary and/or ways? If you do not like it here, leave....you are free to do so. All nations are different and I am sure it has to do with the way of life.....we do stand out, and that is why we have so many immigrants, right? Everyone wants to come here in the end.

....and to the "unknown" person who gave a stupid answer to this questions by saying "Bush has a stupid face and that we (Americans) don't know what we ought to do"...... what a lame answer. If anyone does not know what he ought to do is you.....how stupid can you be!

In ancient China, there are 6 small countries, which were always fighting and were using diffenrent cashes. The king of Qin unified the 6 countries and began to use same cashes. But this emperor used very atrocious approaches. This might be one of the reasons, for which his dynasty lasted not long.

We have more of a conglomeration of people from all over the world. The Countries in Europe have cultures that date back centuries. I suppose we in American are just still learning. Our culture is relatively new and still changing everyday from the influence of the influx of immigrants.

Yes, but in many ways, our language and ways are simpler. (We call them "bookies", not "turf accountants," for instance.) You may as well say that the English make things complicated for no good reason, or stubbornly cling to tradition.

Americans can do whatever we want with cars because we invented them and buy the most. :-)

Seriously, I think that the most American thing is that if we see something that sucks, we try to change it. It's in our founding documents, even.

Any linguist will tell you that languages change over time. Since we are on this side of a huge ocean and we have different experiences than britain (IE: Dutch influence before the brits came along) then we have a different set of influences that will make us different.

ok??
