and now has aplied for a goverment training scheme could this effect him . do they look at criminal records of students who apply

Yes they do. They are sometimes willing to waive it but he will have to explain what happened and prove he is clean now. You can get his record expunged, which means to get rid of the crime on your record. He has to have been good for so long and I think you have to go to court. I know a judge does it but I would call alawyer to make sure what you have to do.

Government training scheme? The word scheme suggests something devious, although I know it can mean other things. I suspect his background will be looked into. My brother works for an aircraft company that supplies to the government, and he had to be checked out. You might let your son know that there is a chance he won't be let in because of his past indiscretion.

Any gov't job would do a criminal background check. They'll probably do one on you as well if he gets accepted just to check out who he knows etc.
