With Bush saying that he will veto the bill that just passed, it becomes increasingly apparent that the only people against this potentially world changing research are the people who don't understand it. What do you think?

Hey, jasonalwaysready is totally right. I know nothing about the subject. I just work in Biopharmaceuticals, and am working on my Master's in Genetics, but hey, I don't know jack. I'll concede, it's not a total ban- but damn close. The cell lines that research is restricted to in the US is heavily constrained. Of the available 78 cell lines useable for culturing and study, only 15 are truly useful. The cost to develop new lines is astronomical. You're right man, I don't know what I am talking about. As to the "breakthroughs" in adult stem cells (extremely limited in scope) they are in adult stem cells because that is where the research is restricted to.

Kinda hard to make breakthroughs in something when you cannot fund it. We spend close to $1,000,000,000 monthly in Iraq. Funny to think if we spent that annually on stem cell research, we could actually CURE things like diabetes. That's what's total crap.

I agree with you. The people I know who are for stem cell research are those who either have or know someone who has a disease that could be cured if the research is allowed. My brother is a type 1 diabetic and the doctor told us he would not live a long life. When we have the ability and technology to combat illnesses like diabetes, cancer, sickle cell, Parkinson's, etc - and we don't take the opportunity to try - we are failing ourselves.

What Bush doesn't realize is that there is a separation of church and state in America. He has made many (if not most) of his decisions with his own morality/religion (or lack thereof) in mind.

You can not make a decision like this based on personal preference. A good president chooses based on what the people want - not his party or lobbyists!

His issue is that he thinks embryonic stem cell work is murder - that is a religious issue. Not all embryos used come from abortions. Bush needs to check in with the rest of America and notice why his approval rating is so low. Being president in a country where almost 1/2 of the population DIDN'T want him - should tell him something!

My husband and I are about to become first time parents. We are banking our daughter's umbilical cord blood so that we could help a family member if need be. Scientists have use newborns cord blood to cure sickle cell anemia and leukemia among other illnesses already.

maybe you just need more education instead of listening to the liberals murder supporting talking points..

theres no such thing, nor has it been debated at all, to BAN stem cell research... .. in that area, i can go home now and do all the reasearch and testing that i want on it. the ban that is being debated is whether federal taxpayer dollars should be spent researching it.

as for this 'potentially world changing research' (also ironic that you dont know much about it) there appears to be little potential in embryonic stem cell research. all of the progress and breakthroughs have come from 'adult' stem cells

thats kinda funny... "[you are wrong!!1] I'll concede, it's not a total ban- but damn close. " so you are admitting that its not a ban, youre just mad that taxpayer dollars wont pay for it.

as for the placement of priorities... ..i didnt think that was in the scope of the question... but if you think that it helps your case...

the bottom line is, until the actual testing on embryonic stem cells is banned, you have nothing to complain about. but if there was as much promise as you think it has, then the market will evolve and invest in it.

there was plenty of time before the ban on federal monies was implemented. before and after, embryonic stem cell research had found 0 (zero) advancements, while adult stem cell research have found over 70 (seventyish). so, why not go with the research that is both ethical, and has promise?

Yes - I think it's total crap!

Yes - I think people don't understand one darn thing about stem cell and what the potentials are. Or they do and want to complete the cycle that we are in now. Get those last big bucks while they can.

Both Energy and Medicine are stagnant systems. Our economies and some of the wealthiest people are dependent on these two moneymakers so change is going to be impossible slow and even thwarted. We have to expect it - and know it - and overcome it.

There is no need for stem cell research. It is a natural function of the human body. Feed the body with the 8 vital sugars called glyconutrients and stem cell production is increased.

stem cell research is the logical next step in the advance of medical knowledge the pharmacopoeia approach is almost exhausted, psycho therapy has it's limitations. This branch of research doesn't equal murder. WHY limit the Persuit of knowledge???

It was predictable. Just a 100 years ago people protested against operations. It was against God's will. Discarding tumors was destroying human life(at least human cells). I image a cure for AIDS means stopping God's punishment against heterosexual acts (Notice lesbians are hardly effected so they must be chosen by God to survive)
The people against freedom of religion are the religious ones. They insist they are the only ones with the right opinion.
