Is "pony" just another word for "horse," or is a pony a specific breed of horse?

many many mistakes here. I'll try to set you all straight-
generally the dividing line is 14 hands 2 inches or 58 inches measured at the highest point on the withers
any breed can produce a pony if the individual does not measure over 14-2 but there are some smaller breeds that consider 14 hands to be the line [ arabs , 1/4horse and others]
a pony is not a baby horse but a mini is a pony but the owners and breeders do not like to admit it.
there are pony breeds [welsh, POA, shetland] but even these will sometimes produce horses or cobs. generally anything pony bred over 14-2 is called a cob but it is still a horse

whoa - a lot of those answers are way wrong. For instance horse = male ect is definetly NOT true. The people that told you a pony is a horse under 14.2 hands are correct. A hand equals 4 inches, so it would be 14 times 4 + 2. This is measured at the withers. (about the end of the mane) I don't know, I think if it was a certain breed, like a Welsh Pony, and was over 14.2 hands it would be a Welsh Cob. A cob is a small horse. Hope that helps!

A pony is not a specific breed of horse, it isn't a horse at all. Well, it's related, but not actually a horse because they never get very big. They are for smaller people, like shorter legs. They are normally short and fat. That is why they are called ponies.

Size. A pony has to be like 13 hands high or smaller at full maturity. There are many breeds of ponies - Welsh, Cobb, Shetland, etc.
I have heard alot of people call a young horse a pony which is incorrect. A young male horse is a colt, a young female horse is a filly, a baby baby is a foal.

ponies are under 14.2 hands high, whereas horses are over 14.2 hands. a baby horse is never called a pony; a baby horse is in general a foal, more specifically a colt or filly. miniature horses are not considered ponies, they are considered miniature horses, and are often measured in inches or centimeters instead of hands.

We merely offered 2 ponies who were experienced by the Amish formerly we were given them. those ponies were stunning and had quite brilliant temperments and manners. the aspect to guage is the actual undeniable reality that many ponies are small and sturdy operating shoes gained't be using them. A horse or a pony can develop into puzzling, strengthen undesirable conduct and develop right into a disipline difficulty at the same time as an experienced rider isn't usually using/education them. considering the fact that little ones journey ponies more desirable than adults will, the ponies would strengthen evasive conduct or merely get ornary, exceedingly if the little ones are pulling on their faces with the bridle/reins, kicking unmercifully, etc. The ponies we had were: a Hackney and a Welsh/Shetland bypass. They were sweet, properly-mannered, and obedient. They beloved interest. They were both experienced to force, too. Our 15 hand horse is likewise properly-mannered and he also receives countless interest. in case you recommend on getting a pony, attempt to get one it fairly is a length you are able to both journey your self and prepare usually or you'll locate a coach who can journey for you, in case you at the prompt are not that experienced. A pony of aboaut 12 to 13 palms would properly be ridden by a smaller human being or by a taller human being who does no longer weigh plenty, for education applications. in case you in basic terms choose a pony for a baby to have somewhat relaxing on, once in awhile, or be led round, then merely get human being who looks sturdy natured and watch it being ridden. A properly-broke horse can be a sturdy selection for a baby who isn't extraordinarily experienced, and a "babysitter" horse is the finest of all, if the rider isn't extraordinarily experienced. enable your baby or human being to take training on the animal to be able to comprehend the thanks to handle it, kindly and correctly. A horse or a pony would properly be puzzling - it genuinely relies upon on the academic, and the rider who's coping with it on an time-honored foundation. Taking using training is a sturdy thanks to be uncovered to horses of multiple temperments and skills. Leasing is sturdy, too. not in any respect purchase a horse or a pony with out someone alongside who knows about horses. you want to locate a probability-free horse or pony, and in basic terms an experieced human being can see which animal it fairly is.
