Doing better on something easier, or worse on something harder?

And Why?

This is a poor question. Who decides on what is easier or harder?

Calculus is damn near impossible for some folks, others find it intuitively obvious.

If the standard for "easy" is that you "do better" on it, then this is a bit of a tautology.

Sorry, but this type of question needs much improvement.

For my ego doing something better in something easier. However I get bored if I'm not challenged so I go for harder courses (which do interest me as well). I really do get bored if I'm not pushed or tested, and since it annoys me to fail at something I try harder to try and become better at the harder thing until it is no longer hard for me but easy and then I can move on.
E.g Taking Calculus BC. BC wasn't my easiest subject, in fact it was my hardest I think, but I know I enjoyed taking that course instead of some easier option.

I guess for instant gratification my immediate answer would be to do better on something easier because this would be a big ego boost for me. However if I think about things more closely I would have to actually say that I think it would be beneficial for me personally to do worse on something harder. I think it all has to do with what we each deem to be easy or hard. For example, English is one of my strengths, and so I would set high standards for myself in this subject area. On the other hand I find mathematics really difficult so I would set my standards lower- although I may do worse- ie getting 60% instead of 90% that I may have got on an English paper, I would still find that pretty good although it was a worse mark because I find maths so hard. So I think worse on something harder is better for me.

Why not just do both. That way one will balance out the other and you know that not only have you done better on something easier, but you have given it your best shot on the harder thing as well.

I would rather do worse on something harder as the more problematic the material the more your brain has to concentrate and think, and therefore, stretch your mind to it's limit (potentially - depending on the level of difficulty) - the only way to become better at the more difficult is to practise expanding your mind.
Think of a body-builder, they only achieve such dramatic muscular tonality by pumping and forcing their muscles to their limit. A lot of us have heard of the phrase 'practise makes perfect', well, that axiom can be applied to every area of life.
Doing worse would be disappointing but, it would highlight areas for improvement and show you what obstacles you need to conquer.

it totally depends on how other people have fared at the same task. if i was to run a mile in two hours when all my friends have done it in 10mins i would feel bad.

If it took them 4 hours i would feel very satisfied with myself....shallow i know.

On an individual basis i would say worse at something harder because as long it feels like a challenge and if you push yourself then you are succeding no matter what...
