I have a IBM thinkpad and we use a Vodaphone Card that slots into the side - all the Telephone providers do them - they usually charge a connection fee and monthly fee which can be pretty expensive.
Alternatively you can buy voiuchers for wireless connectuions (your laptop should be wireless enabled of course).
There are Hotspots all over the place and various ways you can pay - credit card or vouchers if you look on BT's website for wireless internet it should direct you but all the other telephone companies have similiar things.

If you have a wireless router its very simple and cheap, and consits of inserting a wireless network card into your laptop, but it probarbly allready has one installed. Once the network card is in, use the disk created when you set up your router to set up wireless internet on your laptop, that should be it.
If you dont have a wireless router, and you want to buy on, i suggest the "Linksys WAG354G" its a simple set up and costs around £30-£50.

You need a DSL connection or a wireless one. DSLs are not that expensive (but still more expensive than dial up internet). It depends on your country.
