Plan on buying a new fridge/freezer. To begin with, the cardinal rule is never use anything sharp (knife, screwdriver, etc) to defrost. You have to either let it thaw naturally or use a hair dryer.
What you've done is punctured the coil and allowed the freon to escape. The cost of repair will be high, especially if it's an old fridge. The system has to be silver-soldered closed, have a vacuum pump hooked up to it and the system evacuated of all moisture. Once that's done then freon has to be pumped back into the unit and the system resealed.
Start looking for sales on fridge/freezers. In the meantime whatta ya scared of? You did something dumb. It wasn't on purpose. Now you know better and you've gained some knowledge. Granted at the cost of a new fridge but hey...education costs money sometimes.
Good luck and next time...use a hair dryer if you're in that much of a rush.

It is hard to tell exactly what the knife penetrated. The cost of replacing it is probably way more than what it is worth because it is so old. Maybe offer to pay for a repair if you feel guilty. If too much freon leaked out it will stop cooling soon, and it would have to be replaced in the repair as well. Repairs can be expensive too, so get a quote first!

The fridge needs to be brazed where it was cut with knife and recharged with gas. You can get a quote on this and compare whether to replace or repair. Better to be open and tell the fact so you may get help from them, (whoever they are)-!

The bad news is the refridgerator is taost. I would be honest with my landlord and make mention that any refridgerator made in the last 20 years is "frost-free". I'm sure you can work it out and perhaps split the cost. If your landlord is a good one he will replace it for you at no cost, and if so stick with him because he's good.
