If the furnace or heater hasn't run in a while the dust from it blowing can cause that smell. If the smell continues for over a week, get it checked. It's a good idea to check for carbon monoxide at least once a year in case the heater is leaking.

You may be getting more than "heat" out of the vents... It may very well be sewer gas or some other fumes...

I would talk to the "Super" and see what can be done about it... In fact, I would even walk DOWN THERE with him and check out the place myself, because if no one can verify what you are saying, he may just "blow you off" by thinking your nuts and not even bother looking into it...

Check all piping and see if they are intact, leading up from the furnace. Then check around and see if there are any sewers uncovered. You may have sewer gas from the drains in the basement that are dry now, an may need to be fille with water.

(I know, I have a "super sensitive sniffer myself, and I can smell things in part per billion... really tough when you worked at a sewage treatment plant!).

I wish you well

It's probably just normal dust that gets hot.
Gas / electric fireplaces always smell like that when they haven't been used for a long time.
