I have a 94 dodge caravan and I think my transmission is going out. I noticed that after I put trans fluid in it (which I think I might have put the wrong kind in)it started acting up.What its been doing is after I drive it for a mile or so I start to hear and feel a thumping. It also will completely stop as if I hit the brakes when I let up off the gas. Also its like it don't want to go the engine reevs up and I have to floor it just to get to go. Could it be because of the fluid I put in it and simply need to drain it w/ a new trans filter or is my van preety much shot? Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

The wrong fluid can easily cause the problems you are experiencing. The viscosity can be sufficiently different that it is not flowing smoothly through the system, and prohibiting it from shifting properly. The "dying" when you come to a halt is most likely the transmission being unable to downshift smoothly, and, being held in a higher gear as it it and with the engine not sufficiently powerful to overcome the resistance, it dies. That is actually a good thing in a way, as were the engine able to overcome it, it likely would create sufficient pressure to do significant damage.
Do take it to a shop immediately and have the system thoroughly flushed. And on the way, try to avoid flooring it as you have been to get it to go. That places enormous hydraulic pressure on the transmission by trying to force the fluid through when it is not designed for such pressure.

It sounds like you put the in wrong type of fluid. Chrslyer vehicles require an ATF+ type of fluid (not Mercon/Dexron or any other). FIrst get the transmission flushed. Check the fluid for condition. If the fluid is dark or metallic, the tranny will reqire a rebuild. If fluid looks OK, you can try to put in the correct fluid and new filter. It sounds like, however, that one of the clutches are burned out and that the tranny will reqiure a rebuild.

It is obvious what the problem is. Like engine oils they also have different transmission fluids. Unlike engine oils if you put the wrong transmission fluid in your car then you will notice some of the problems that you are experiencing now. Check your owners manual for the correct fluid. Also take it to a certified ASE mechanic to get it checked.

This is just FYI. An automatic transmision work by friction. The wrong fluid could either cause too much friction on too little. I agree with James. You should have it checked out by a professional.

unfortunatly dodge has really never made a good tranny. i would flush it out ASAP and then see what happens from there. always start with the cheapest thing to do, then go from there. if that doesnt cure it, chances are you need a new tranny.
brakes should have nothing to do with it. find out if you need a new tranny before you fix the breaks. cause if it does need a new tranny, then it might be time to sell it.

Quick - go to an oil change place, - clean, flush transmission, new filter. Might fix it. Do it today. Not tomorrow. Next trip - go right there.

It's not the brakes, but if you put the wrong fluid in you could have damaged it beyond repair.

You probably need to get your transmition overhauled. I'd go ahead and take it in before it quits completely and leaves you stranded somewhere.
