to hook 1 computer up to another computer without using a network hub or router, You have to use whats called a Crossover cable, A basic ethernet cable will not work. Do any of your friends have a network you can plug into, and copy the files. Or maby even a internet cafe, Never used one so im not sure of there rules. To use a USB memory stick would work, but if you have many files it would be slow, and might be very expensive depending on the stick you buy.

Well... If you have an internet connection, connect both computers to your network (I am just going to assume you have more than 1 computer connected to the internet where you live and at some point you are using a router or switch, if I assume wrong then this answer will probably not help.) and connect to AOL Instant Messanger. Sign on to AIM on both computers and either use the Direct Connect or just the File Send option and on you go. Since you are on the same network the transfer will be very fast.
Your other option would be to put the files in a folder, right click on it, and under the Share options, enable it to be a shared folder and then click on my computer and then My Network Places (or something along those lines) and you should see the folder there.

Ethernet cross over cable network ( i think rj45)
connect both with cable switch on both
open my network places
open network wizard
follow instruction on screen
repeat on other but make sure the work group is the same :-mine
if one is xp do this first
if other is w98 /me get wizard to make a network disc
failing that a pen drive
another way is remove hdd from old system put in a caddie
put caddie in a desktop and transfer to a disc
a caddie is a useful accessory

You could... zip the files and save them in an email account as a draft on the old computer and then use the new computer to access the draft email and download like that? Of course, presuming the old computer can access the internet...
Otherwise I think a USB drive will be your best bet, as long as the old computer has a USB drive of course.

Definately USB pen/flash drives are the easiest. You can buy them really cheap and they are ultra-portable, much more stable than floppies, and far easier to set up than a network. I wouldn't use anything else for file transfers now!

You can't use just an ethernet cable. You must use a special crossover ethernet cable. Then run your network setup wizard. You can find it in control panel.

You can buy a USB flash drive:
http://www.4allmemory.com/search/upgrades/flash-digital-camera-memory/usb-flash-drives.cfm?q=USB+Flash+Drives
You just stick it into computer 1 in the USB port and then you can store things in it like its an extra hard drive. Then you just stick it into computer 2 and then you can copy the files from it.
I have one myself, and its very useful.
Or just upload the files to http://www.xdrive.com and then make the other computer download the files from it.

i used an external hard drive to transfer my important files including music to my new comp, but that may be more expensive or more space than you need
