I always fall asleep facing the wall which faces outside. This always was the case when i lived at home also and i found if i tried to goto sleep facing inside i could never get to sleep. Why is it that i cannot sleep facing a certain way?

I always fall asleep facing the ceiling. This is because I recently had a replacement hip operation and you have to sleep on your back for several weeks so that you can't roll over onto your new hip.
A lot of people think that if you sleep with your head-end facing north you get a better nights' kip.

I sleep either on my tummy or on my side on the left hand side of the bed facing out rather than into the middle of the bed. I sleep furthest away from the door and out of view of any mirrors. I am a strange creature. I cannot sleep very well on the right hand side for some reason, I just cannot get comfortable but if the bed is next to a door then I would prefer to toss and turn on the right hand side of the bed than sleep next to the door.

I always sleep on my left hand side with one hand under my head, and one hand touching my lips. It doesn't matter if I'm facing a wall or not, but I prefer to have my back to the room.

I have always slept on my left side, or rather, I slept on my front until it became too uncomfortable as a teen... facing right, with my left cheek on pillow. This menat I had my back to the wall, and could see the rest of the room.

My room now is set up the other way around, so if I sleep on my left, I face a wall. I cannot sleep on my other side. It's like I programmed my brain to only think "sleepytime" when I'm in a very particular position. I also sleep with my head right in the bottom corner of my pillow. If I move my head further up I can't sleep.

I'm an insomniac, so maybe that explains my obsessive need for routine, but I'm guessing it's the same principle with you. You teach yourself that there are certain cues asscoiated with sleep, to prevent yourself from dozing elsewhere, and it doesn't always work in your favour. My cues are left hand side, bottom corner of pillow, one hand under head, one hand touching lips, complete darkness, clock ticking. Yours obviously include a wall. If one of your cues is missing you cannot initiate sleep process. I guess some people sleep better than others because they require less cues, whilst insomniacs like myself, have too many.

I feel comfortable looking at the wall because it feels a bit like a secure "cave" to me.

Maybe this sounds stupid but I can't relax while facing an entire room - but if I only see the wall - or, even better, the corner - I feel safe and can relax.

I think it has to do with the time you spend in your mother's womb - it gives you a certain amount of security.

Mind over Brody! It's all in your head. You have already told yourself that "you can't sleep any other way" You probably tell yourself that when you TRY to change sleeping positions ("ohh I know I won't fall asleep like this but let me try") If you are tierd enough you can fall asleep any where and any how. It's all good, as long as you sleep!

I sleep on my tummy and have done so since I was a baby. Last year..on this day in fact..I had an operation and was unable to sleep on my tummy for quite a few months due to an incision there. I did not sleep well at all!! I have resumed sleeping on my tummy now..and I love it!!
If my hubby is not home though..I usually "starfish it" in the bed though..still sleeping on my tummy :)

Like anything else it is a habit. Your body is use to this and has decided this is how I am going to fall asleep. If you want to sleep in other positions force your self , if you can to stay in that position until you fall asleep.

Habit.

I am a side sleeper, but can fall asleep on either side. I can also sleep on my back for short periods of time, but then have to turn over.

I can never sleep on my stomach.
