1. Pluralism - They are prepared to govern in a pluralistic society not just put forth their personal beliefs. This means inclusion, tolerance(religous, political, otherwise), and forebearance - regulating only those things that have a direct harmful effect on others like stealing or murder.

2. Integrity - Their primary concern is for the public good and not for personal gain. For this, look at their investments. A real politician should not allow themselves to be compromised by a personal conflict of interest, especially monetary. A general rule - look at whom big business supports and go the other way. Big business is very open about being in it for the cash as priority one. That is their goal and stockholders hold sway over the environment, local people, employess and society - opposite of what you want in a politician.

3. Effectiveness - Look at their past record and what they have accomplished, not what they talk about. Check it like reading a resume - would you hire this person? What was their GPA? What projects did they initiate?

4. Experience - the required experience depends on the office but should reflect the duties of the office. For national office, If they would be dealing with foreign policy - Have they travelled? Do they have experience working with/living in another culture? For local office, do they have contact the real local culture or do they ride their SUV's out of town to live in a "safe" suburb - only getting out for work, home or campaigning?

5. Listening - have you been able to access this politician? Do they respond to questions? Do they show up when invited? Do you feel that they are really trying to represent you or are they trying to sell you? Have they ever tried to tell you that something is not important that you feel was important? Does your opinion affect their policy?

6. Rational - Is their policy supported by data? Are they willing to change their stance if the research says they are wrong? Are they really looking for the truth or do they just want backup for their opinions. Look at it this way: If you are have someone remove your child's brain tumor, do you want the surgeon who prayed a lot in college or the one who studied a lot in college. Most people would go for the one who studied a lot because it is a specialized skill. Does your politician have the skill to discern the truth from the propoganda and would he be willing to admit it if he was proven wrong.
