Damn that...mate of mine got 14 years for manslaughter in 1979 (he meant to kill, and so got off lightly - and spent his 10 years in the most cushty nicks). As he was b-l-a-c-k, he rightly presumed once out of prison, he was not going to put up with both 'hardships' - he had to put up with his colour...as most did then (and perhaps even now in the UK), but admitting his record to all - to get jobs, bank credit/loans etc. was just not on, and so he just typed out a sweet, but 'economical with the truth' info to get his first jobs once out of jail, and for the past 15 years has owned a bona-fide car-repair business up in north Manchester, and has a small flat in quiet area of Malaga.
The worst thing about Britain is that if one is determined to change their ways on release from jail, society will always use ones' past to kick one down...and if the crime caught the attention of the media, they will be eager to repeat one's crime - as in certain parts of the media, that is deemed as 'sexy'...

I think you will always have a criminal record, but your convictions will be spent and shouldn't affect you in your day to day life.
