In particular, I'm looking to get answers from people who put loads of decorations on their houses - when do you start planning? where do you get your new decorations from? How much money do you invest each year?

I like to make handmade Christmas cards every year so I have already begun planning for that. Also on the 24th & 25 of this month is when QVC has Christmas in July. I always allow myself at least $30 for new ornaments on there.
This year I opened an ING Direct Savings account online. All Christmas gifts will come out of that money.
I also started in Jan by taking pics of the kids every month & plan on making one of those picture books that you can order online (Shutterfly or My Publishing), a year in the life sort of thing as a gift for all family members.

I keep saying every year I will start early saving and don't!!

My room colours have changed and I'm wanting to have blue and silver on my tree but I don't really set a budget I just buy cheap and maybe if a pricey bauble catches my eye I might get it.
I like simplicity at Christmas my room has the tree decorated and I have a garland on the fireplace and pine cones scented.
My table is decorated with gold charger plates that cost me a £1 each in pound stretchers and I got a nice dinner set that is white with a gold rim which I set on top.
Every Year I buy crackers to match and napkins which isn't pricey and the dinner set is very common so every so often I add to it like a serving dish or gravy jug.
If you are just starting off don't get to carried away as every year you can either add to your collection and don't forget to keep them as good as possible as they can be used year after year.
Christmas does not have to be all expensive.

Sorry just read your question again and you ask about loads of decorations my sister in law has everything and everything and she like I say in mine builds it up every year she likes to get a new light every year for outside
She takes everything out of her living room cushions, pictures and ordaments etc and she has the christmas alternative She has christmas wall decor, ordaments, christmas sittee throw and cushions its mad and way over the top lol.
And outside its just lights lights .

I've already started making cherry brandy for my grandparents and in-laws, and I guess I've started buying because if I see something nice for somebody I'll buy it and put it in my little cupboard.
I don't decorate too much, just a tree and a few things, sometimes we make our own decorations, like putting foil on a bit of card all shaped pretty, and I'll spend about £20 on a tree, maybe £150 - £200 on gifts, and thats about it!

The best time to buy Christmas decorations is in the sales just after Christmas. Places like Woolworths.
I know someone who always buys Christmas crackers in the sales and teases them open to insert decent gifts.

What is this with Thanksgiving? Is the US site so boring that they keep wandering on to the UK Answers?

Start saving money now!

As far as decorations go.....wing it. Usually start putting them up after Thanksgiving before the weather turns south.

Preparing for Christmas at this time of year? I leave EVERYTHING until Christmas Eve - that's if I bother with Christmas at all, as I get older the less appeal it has.
