I am a 30yr old woman wanting to teach at primary level KS1 or lower KS2. I have a 2:1 degree in European Studies and German. I do not live near to a provider of PGCE so it would be difficult for me to attend a course. I have heard about GTP and SCITT courses, any info would be of help on these. How to apply? Where to apply to?

I'm not sure about SCITT courses, however....

To do a GTP you need to contact the TTA (Teacher Training Agency), they will have details of universities that offer this course. For a GTP you need to spend a minimum of 1 year in a school and you are assessed in the school. However, this route can be costly for a school as they will have to pay you yet you will not be allowed sole control of a class.

PGCE is hard to do for Primary Education as many want to be primary teachers actually do a 4 year BEd in Primary Education.

I would stress that with a German degree you have greater chance of becoming a seconday school teacher. It is extremely hard to get into Primary school teaching due to the enourmous number of candidates that apply.

I know a Head of a PRimary school that had over 400 applications for 1 teaching post, and this is aparently the norm.

Hi, my Mum has taught for the past 15 years withut a PGCE.
She too has a 2:1 degree (Humanities & English) and found that private schools often dont have the requirement for teachers to be PGCE qualified.
I would recommend having a look around at vacancies in your area in private schools, and just enquire as to the posibility of teaching there.

Contact your local education authority - they should be able to give you all the info you need. But be warned, it's the worst job in the world. I'd rather shovel **** than go back to teaching.
