If you have ever understood or studied the properties and laws of light, the first thing you learn (which you also learn when learning how to use a "color-printer" in developing photography), is that there are only THREE "primary colors" (Red, Green, & Blue) from which ALL other colors are made.
The "cross" between red and green is "orange" and "yellow"...and on the wave-length prior to "red" is "infra-red"...and on the other end following "blue" is "violet" and "ultra-violet". In the "rainbow", there are MANY colors...but the colors we list as colors of the rainbow are: Red; Orange: Yellow: Green: Blue & Violet...SIX colors in all.

It depends on your culture
In the ancient world, rainbows were represented as having three colours: red, green, and blue-violet.
In China, it was considered that there were 5 colours in the rainbow: Red,Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet.
In the West, we have traditionally said there are 7: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But most people do not actually see indigo as a separate hue in the rainbow; seven is a conventionalized number in Western culture (Seven wonders of the world, Seven sleepers of Ephesus, etc).
