It is supposed to be an indication that someone has been indwelt with the Holy Spirit. But most people completely misunderstand what the tongues are that are being spoken. It is not simply mindless senseless blathering that "only the Select" can understand. It is speaking a language perfectly to which you've had no exposure and in which you've had no formal training, like me speaking perfect Hindi, for instance.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

speaking in tongues means speaking in a language not understood.. if so according to the bible someone in the group must explain what the person who was speaking in tongues meant. If no explanation the one speaking in tongues not guided by the Holy Spirit but by the devil

The technical term is glossolalia, and is referred to by some as "getting happy." A person is seized by the Holy Spirit and talks in (to others) unintelligible speech.

Speaking in your language and people sitting in the audience from several different languages all understand you . Not that mumbo jumbo and tom foolery that some churches have going on . that is nothing, just people acting a fool .

it means that when you are worshiping and you've reached a high level of spirituality that you speak a weird lanuage that cannot be said in a normal situation in everyday life and only the people that are taken up in spirituality as well can understand what they mean.

Speaking in a "spiritual" language that cannot be understood by humans. It supposedly is brought on by Divine intervention.

this is the Gods language, if you get in to spritual life you come to know in detail. this is praising the Lord Almighty in another language. it may be also in English. one of my church believer use to talk tongues in English. but the thing is she is a farmer. she have not even went to school.
