At the outset, I say that such a question is meaningless and absurd. Newton and Einstein belonged to two different eras, with a yawning gap with regard to the how receptive people were to radical ideas in science, let alone Physics, between them. Newton was born in the same year that saw the demise of Galileo Galilee, and not long ago was the latter threatened of torture, by the church, if he didnot take his words (which were correct) back..... Einstein lived in an era which saw a scientific revolution take place.
Newton's legacy lies not in his laws of motion or the things he contributed to dynamics and optics and mathematics as The Lucasian Professor or to the state as the master of the mint. It lies in a single statement he made while stating the law of gravity. He said " Every body IN THE UNIVERSE attracts every other body IN THE UNIVERSE............." thus, Newton stated for the very first time in all of the history of science, that PHYSICAL LAWS ARE OF UNIVERSAL VALIDITY. The rest is immaterial whenone considers his greatest contribution to science... any one strong in science with a keen sense of inquiry could have done the rest... But it took the genius of Sir Issac Newton to make the above statement.
Einstein was great in his own right. He solved the mystery of Black body radiation, introduced concept of light quanta( to be called photons later), relativity .... He is great because, during his days, there was some motivation for formulating a theory of verifying an old one. Newton's Theory of Gravity was irrefuted till the day Einstein published his special theory of Relativity and consequently, the general Theory. There was no apparant need for him to formulate a new theory of gravity. Classical theory was going fine... and there lies the greatness of the man....
Coming to your question, who is the greatest, it is neither easy, nor possible to judge them. But if my life depended on the answer, I would choose Newton, for he, hailing from a humble background and a forgettable childhood and miserable college years, and in non receptive and sceptic era, which Einstein would only have heard of, started the revolution in science that lead to consequent revolutions..... till date....

Without a doubt man Einstein has been and will always be the greatest of them all....Some guys would disagree with me because they haven't heard of Einstein's manuscript that was written by him before the three pages of his theory was published....Newton definitely was a great man to have invented the logarithmic table but not greater than Einstein...In his manuscript it was a scrapbook filled with formulas like:(1/3)mc ^ 2,....,8/45 mc ^ 2 and in the middle was written E= mc ^ 2 with a circle around it....The formulae is dimensionally correct which proves that the formulae is not an incorrect one but guess what nobody could prove it....However later Einstein showed that newton's laws of forces were a condition and could easily be deduced from his laws of relativity....Just put v/c = 0 and find it urself that proves who einstein really was....

I know it sounds silly but I'm thinking of what would have happened if Newton hadn't lived versus Einstein having never lived. While I suspect that someone else would have come around to figure out his work eventually (Galileo had already worked on motion and a contemporary of Newton worked on calculus), albeit it would have taken awhile!, I do not know if I could say the same about Einstein. I mean yes, someone would have eventually figured out things like special relativity, but general relativity is such an incredible step in thinking that I cannot imagine we would have it today without him.

Newton. He had invented differential calculus, which helped Einstein later to develop his theories.
Also, many other scientific works had been developed on basis established by Newton's works, and it all happened before Einstein's work, but Einstein used those works for his purposes.
So, Newton is greater scientist.

Einstein. He has lots of imagination. But Newton is also great too.
Actually logically Einstein should be more intelligent than Newton, because he is more modern. Nowadays people are more intelligent than people long time ago.

how can you compare them, on the one trajectory of thought there could be no Einstein without Newton because if you did not have Newtons basis for the development of physics , do you belive that there would be a basis for Einstains work.
On the other hand they have lived in diferent periods, diferent societys, and worked diferent part of physics.
Not comparable, same you could say for Aristotel and Kant, or some other pair of great scientics of phylosophers.
They are great men, great scientists, had made a giant steps in physics, but what would made one greater then the other.
You do not compare apples with peaches, they both have their flavours.

In terms of the greatest contribution to physics, Newton was greater. He was also very likely more intelligent, probably having an IQ similar to Leonardo da Vinci or William Shakespeare.
