Death is a personal tragedy. However, some personal tragedies could be far more violent than death which in fact may appear as a deliverance. In a famous Sanslrit drama The Clay Chariot the innocent and honoured hero being led for hanging on account of false charges of murder against him has this to say,
Death I am not afraid of
But of soiling my
Blameless Reputation!
The tragedies we often read about people committing suicides on account of poverty shows that it must be more galling .Thousand literally thousands of farmers committed suicides in India on account of uneconomic returns from agriculture and the inevitable propspect of immersion in debts. Physical atrocities like rape and corporal harrassment compromising liberty and honour are also another violent apart from death. Long and wasting diseases are far more violent than death itself . In fact the end is putting an end to all the miseries. Patriots like Bhagat Singh had put the noose round their neck with their own hands fearlessly for Death was a thousand times more preferable than the slavery. What is said in a different context would be relevant even here, 'Death be now proud." This is the title of a book by John Gunther depicting intimately the struggle of his child in its fight against cancer and the fortitude shown by it even at this tender age in this struggle.

Death itself isn't violent or painful or traumatic, it's the events leading up to it that can be distressing. Children die everyday, quietly and without fuss. The things that violate peoples lives are those that leave emotional scars for the rest of their lives. these scars cause anxiety ( a nice word for fear) and depression (a nice word for severe unhappiness). Even psychological bullying in chat rooms, offices, cyber stalking, sexual crime and a whole host of new perversions and cruelty is leading to people becoming sick and taking time off through stress. Often refered to as "stress". Newspapers, always put "stress" in quotes, not because they are quoting anyone - but to give the impression that it's an excuse for a "sickie".

I hate to reccommend a literary source, but see if you can stomache "American Psycho" or "The Informers", both of which are cruel and death is a longed for release.
