Cannavaro is the better player. Zidane has accomplished great things, but Cannavaro is so consistent in every game. Zidane is too streaky. Plus Italy shut down Zidane in the World Cup. However France could not crack Cannavaro's wall of defense!

Cannavaro is a brilliant defender and great footballer, but Zidane is, over the span of their careers on another level. I find it hard to explain what he bought to the game for me personally. Magic and grace, incredible skills. Yeah for me Zizou will be my all time favourite along with Pele...unless the future brings someone more incredible.

Captain Cannavaro.
He played 7 match - every minute from start to the end, never replaced. Having 2 match ended in e.t. he collects 690' played.
He was GREAT in every match. Italy failed against USA and AUS, with unimpressive playing. He has never failed.
He was outstanding in his box, fighting on every ball and never had a yellow card. His responsibilities become harder when Nesta - rated as one of the world best defenders - was out by injury since 3rd match.
I write exactly the same words BEFORE final match was started. Cannavaro was so far the best tournament player.
It's usual to have some trouble in spotting it out great plays performed by defenders. I guess many of us perfectly remember Del Piero's goal at 121' against Germany,
It was the best (and a perfect one) WC fast break attack (Italy rules in this kind of plays), but few noticed how it begins... here's a link to watch what Cannavaro does ;-)
At 121' when Italy was winning...

cannavaro because zidane knocked down materazzi. i know he told him something probably really mean but there is no rule in soccer that says you can't say anything but there is a rule against this what zidane did. if i was him and materazzi insulted me, i would probably just say something even worst to him
