It is because as sunlight enters the earth's atmosphere, it strikes various particles in the atmosphere and is scattered in all directions. However, some light is scattered more than others. Blue light, because it has a higher frequency (shorter wavelength) than other light colours, is scattered more than other colours. Red light is the least scattered. This means that blue light is scattered the most throughout the sky in all directions; hence the sky is blue.
This effect is also what causes red sunsets and sunrises. At dawn and dusk, the direction of light is nearly a tangent to the earth's surface. This means it has more atmosphere to travel through than if if was shining directly through the atmosphere perpendicular to the earth's surface. This means that the blue light becomes too scattered to be visible, and the least scattered colour, red, is seen more visibly.

The sky is blue because of Diffuse Sky Radiation which means that light from the sun comes in different wavelengths (shorter or longer) and scatters as it enters the earths surface. The air scatters shorter wavelengths preferrably over longer ones and therefore the sky is blue.
