True love is respecting, pure, not jealous, or hurting the other person.
Sounds like your "love" was really addiction...an unhealthy one. Relationships like that happen all the time - they are filled with manipulation tactics, put downs, control, testing each other, etc.
You're so consumed with each other that you can't break free. Pretty soon, being together feels normal, even though it is not healthy or right.
To answer your question...no. If you are hurting each other in the relationship, it is not worth saving. They are better off with people who really respect and don't manipulate or put them down.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "crush each other's wings," but if I'm interpreting correctly ... I was in a relationship with a guy who pretty much dragged me down and there was absolutely no way I could've reached my whole potential had I stayed with him. He loved me unquestionably, and I loved him, but I felt so trapped in the relationship. I could only fight so long before having to break free. I think that part of love should be to encourage the other person to reach his/her full potential, not to sit there and say "Sorry, hun."
