Just because you don't burn does not mean your skin is safe. The lawsuit against the makers of Banana Boat, BullFrog, Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic and Neutrogena brand sunscreens claims that longer ultraviolet-A rays still can damage skin. UV-A is associated with skin cancer, wrinkling and aging. The lawsuit states that despite the increasing use of sunscreen, skin cancer has been rising at an alarming rate.
Consumers are understandably confused as to what protection they are receiving.
To make matters even more baffling, scientists have announced new benefits from vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin. Two studies have found that women who have the highest levels of vitamin D have the lowest risk of breast cancer. Exposure during adolescence seemed to reduce adults' risk of breast cancer by 25 to 45 percent.
These new studies confirm previous research suggesting that cancers of the colon, breast, prostate and lung are less common among people who get regular sun exposure. It's hard to get adequate amounts of vitamin D just from the diet, because the amount is small in fortified milk or fish such as salmon, tuna or sardines.
Vitamin D also may help protect people from developing type 2 diabetes (Diabetes Care, March 2006). A large study followed the diets and health habits of more than 80,000 women for 20 years. Women who got the most vitamin D and calcium were least likely to develop this condition.
What should consumers do with this conflicting information?
Dermatologists say excess sun exposure is harmful but some vitamin D is beneficial. Sunscreen can keep the skin from making vitamin D, but it might not provide adequate protection from skin cancer.
One possible way out of the dilemma is to be sensible about exposure. As little as 10 or 15 minutes of sun on arms and face three or four times a week without sunscreen should provide enough vitamin D. The alternative: Take vitamin supplements adding up to approximately 1,000 IU daily.
But if you will be out in the sun, after 10 minutes' exposure, make sure you have complete protection from harmful solar rays. Look for a sunblock containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. Choices include Blue Lizard Australian Suncream, Solbar Zinc or Vanicream.

What the mean is if u tan and go outside in the sun to sunbathe. U will look like George Hamilton with leathery skin. I am telling u that makes u look a lot older and then there is the skin cancer to deal with too.

Well, I would say "There is a difference between scratching your **** and ripping it to pieces!!!"
Of course sunshine is good for us - without it we would die. And psychologicially, most of us feel better when the sun is shining.
But there is a difference between enjoying the sun, and baking yourself like a sacrifice !!
Skin cancer can be curable. But sometimes it kills. And in between it is stressful, embarrassing and painful, not just for the sufferer but for all their family and friends.
It's your life. Play Russion Roulette if you like.
But I would advise - ENJOY the sun by all means. But protect yourself by using the appropriate suncreams and not staying out in it for hours on end in the full heat.
Hope this is helpful.

I do not sunbath , but when walking I get some sun, the sun can be both bad and good for you. If prolonged in sun can cause cancer, wrinkles, etc. if in moderate you get vitamins from the sun , so little wont hurt you , here is a good site on the sun and some effects.

Sun in moderation is good for your overall well-being, yes. You get a good amount of Vitamin D from the sun which aids in the absorption of calcium in the body. It also wards off such maladies as ricketts and SAD (seasonal affective disorder). It is indeed good to get out in the sunshine while we get it (the UK weather can be so persnickety). However, it is still good to wear white clothing, hats and sunscreen if out in the sun for long periods of time. It will prevent against sunburn and, in the long term, skin cancer.

the sun is bad for you in large doses, just like anything is, milks bad for you in large quantities, as are carrots. you can have too much of a good thing. the sun IS good for the mind, and can raise spirits, where rain can bring you down. Ever heard of SAD? Seasonal affective disorder. A lot of people get down in winter thru the lack of sun.
as long as you keep protected through sun cream and keep well hydrated i dont see a problem.

The sun is very bad for you, but that doesn't mean you have to stay indoors. You can use sunblock, even some shampoos have it for hair now. As with almost everything, just use moderation and common sense.

Skin cancer is only curable in the early stages - my mother died of it. However, I have to agree with you that it is so good for the wellbeing of the soul, body and mind. It makes me feel so much more relaxed and happy.

The sun is GOOD for you. They always bring up the negatives. We all need the sun, our bones need it, otherwise we'll all get rheumatism and crap bones. It is good for the skin and hair too, and definitely for the mind. Happy mind makes happy people. Everything in moderation.
