Go to the acropolis, the theatre of Dionysus, the Agora and the roman Forum. All these are nearby, you can go on the same promenade. also, a very interesting site is the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos, and the temple of Zeus (Olympieion). These are in the centre of Athens too. 2 small excursions (1 hour distance at the most, by car) include the temple of Poseidon at Sounio and the Sanctuary of Demeter in Eleusis.
2 more distant but great excursions are Delphi (2,5 hrs by car) and the temple of Afaia in Aigina, a small island, 1 hour from Piraeus (boats leave every hour). Aigina is a beautiful island where you can also swim. The area of Sounio is good for swimming too.
Also, don't miss the byzantine heritage: Athens has many byzantine churches, all around the area of Plaka, and if you go to Delphi make sure to visit the monastery of Hosios Loukas. It is on the way and it is a World Heritage Site - absolutely marvellous.

Of course, Ashley is right. The National Archaeological Museum, the Cycladic Art Museum, the Byzantine Museum and the Benaki Museum are all a must! The last three are all in the same neighboyrhood, so you can see them all in one morning. On Thursfay, the Benaki is open all day (the Benaki Museum is sort of like the V&A, but Greek)

Acropolis, theatre of Dionysos: metro station Acropolis
Keramikos: metro station Thiseio, then ask
Olympieion: entrance from Vasilissis Olgas(metro Syntagma)
National Museum: Patision street, metro Victoria
Byzantine Museum: Vasilissis Sofias street, metro Evangelismos (Benaki and Cycladic art are very near there too, ask when you're there)
Ancient Agora: Adrianou street, metro Monastiraki or Thiseio
Gorgoepekoos church: behind the Cathedral, Mitropoleos street, metro Syntagma or Monastiraki
Kapnikarea church: Ermou street, metro Syntagma
Ag. Apostoloi church: in the Agora

You will easily find a map where all odf them are indicated. The Arch. Museum used to sell a historic map of Athens, that was really good.

By the way, there are many sites connected to Alexander in Northern Greece, in the area of Macedonia (Vergina, Pella, Filippoi, etc), unlike the so-called state of "Macedonia"

I agree with all of the above, but don't forget the museums! The National Archaeological Museum was newly renovated for the Olympics two years ago, and it is fantastic!

Also, to get a great view of the Acropolis and theaters, go to Philopappou hill. You truly cannot take a bad picture from up there.

The Plaka section in Athens is between the oldest aspects merely down below the acropolis and genuinely a sturdy section for classic Greek food in spite of your funds. Very atmospheric and bright. savour!

Hello dear!
I admire the exactness and details "cpinatsi" has answered! She is great! Also, visit some regular restaurants as well some called: "Archeon Gefseis", where they serve food as it used to be made in ancient Greece, before potatoes, tomatoes, and others arrived to Europe!
