When a person is making statements about a certain subject to a group of people and during the conversation this small statement falls out of his mouth, saying,"You Know What I Mean", he is really asking you to READ his mind..... Unfortunately, humans were not graced with the ability of mind reading, thank god. I have found that people who use this and another statement, "AAAHH YOU KNOW AAAH", have very limited vocabulary and doesn't know how to express themselves in a useful manor. I had a boss who used the, aaahhh you know
aahh, statement so much during boss/employs meetings, it was difficult to understand what points she was trying to communicate to her staff. It rubbed me so bad that I talked to her about it after one of our meetings. Need less to say, it didn't go over very well with her. I have a bad habit of expressing what is on my mind, no matter how it is excepted, it gets me in trouble.. Anyway, thats my thoughts on those 2 statements..

I am not english born speaker, but people who I noticed to use the term "do you know what I mean" are not some extra bit of inteligent. They use this even there is no need to use it at all. These people are not colourful and creative speakers, and not sure about themself too. If I speak clearly and distinctly then I dont need to use such term "do you know what I mean", according to respond and reaction of listener I can get impression if I am understood or not. I also got this usage of this term link with people who I label as "white trash accent".

'You know what I mean' is a figure of speech. The regular use of it, assumes that the user has developed some familarity to whoever; he or she, is in conversation with. There is also the assumption that you have some shared knowledge of a given topic. Over time, such figures of speech become common usage within a language, to such an extent it is language shaping and changing. In the case of the above, if one or more of the two given areas is missing; the expression can still be habit forming.

Things that infuriate me are people that say things like(babe)because they are too lazy to say your name, and people that say(I can put my/our stamp on it)commonly used by people looking at or buying house`s,also the words(fair play to you)what does that mean exactly? The English language has just fallen into a pit of Americanisms and in answer to your question ,yes, there`s a lot of (know what I mean`s about).

Well aren't sisters our behavioral keepers? LOL. I say that all the time too and it is just out of habit and it is just a saying and i would not worry about it.

My sister pointed out that every time i make a point about something i slap my leg and i had never noticed it before! i thought what is wrong with her,why is she slapping herself all the time LOL.

People generally say it after the most simple bit of language. Its an annoying waste of breath and conversational time, said by people with nothing difficult to understand to say, know what i mean?

LOL!!! i say it all the time but the only time i notice it is when im having a conversation and i really mean to say 'you know what i mean' and its in context and it makes me laugh!
and by the way, for those who are going to abuse you for asking this question (you know who you are (BB is watching you!)) check your spelling first then you won't seem as dumb yourself!

I guess they only say it when they except you to sympathize with what they are saying to you. Maybe your sister is not exactly understanding every thing that you are telling her. Maybe she is a smart alleck, you know what I mean...
I say it when I expect people to understand fully where I'm coming from.
