There is some under the floorboards in our attic and I think it is disintegrating. It has been there at least 15 years.

Physically if it is not disturbed... forever. It is made of spun glass.

Practically, it is no longer any good when the "fluff" (air pockets) are gone. This is caused by crushing due to dirt or moisture or simply the force of its own weight (very very slow). Keep it clean and dry and it will last the lifetime of the house.

Lets see, cigarrette butts, that are made from fiberglass (betcha didnt know THAT one, did ya?), will last 25,000 years!! So, your fiberglass insulation will last that long also. Now, gravity and dirt, and all other enviromental factors, will "compress" it over time, so that It will lose its "insulation factor"...

(This is like taking a regular glass and laying it sideways on the ground....fiberglass, when compressed is like regular glass, no insulation value what so ever! Its the air pockets that make it the way it is... This is why, when people sell some one fiberglass pads for thier trailers to "sit on", its a joke! Just like putting a glass under there and what a waste of money it is).

I wish you well..

If the insulation was really made of GLASS fibre, then it should last forever. But you could get mice or bats making a mess of it, physically and chemically!
Oh, and sloppy electricians or plumbers could mess it up too, if there was some work being done and the insulation was "in their way"....
