Although I like AMD much better than Intel for my machines, I would have to recommend Intel in this scenario. CAD and graphic programs use a considerable amount of CPU usage, which isn't really a problem in and of itself, as both AMD and Intel can withstand that, but Intel will be able to give you more power for longer periods of time, which is what is needed with CAD. I would strongly consider getting a Pentium D if possible, as that will give you a boost in processing power as well.

These are two different companies involved in making of processors, like Mercedes and BMW? Intel is far popular and stable then AMD but however, in recent times AMD has improved a lot and its Athlon processor is really competing well.

I suggest you better go for Intel as you will be taking chances with AMD to run your CAD applications!

As a user of Solidworks, I can guarentee that both CPUs are fine for most CAD programs, which really don't require much processing speed. You'll almost see no difference in speed between the two chips.

The more important factor will be the graphics card. Surprisingly, for many basic CAD tasks, an integrated graphics card will do. However, it will be quite slow, so I highly recommend getting an OpenGL graphics card (nVidia Quadro FX or ATI FireGL series). The nVIDIA Quadro FX 2500M (512MB) is about as fast as it gets on a laptop. Dell also has a few deals in their Mobile Workstation section.

Also, you'll need 1-2GB of memory. Just about any kind will do.

Look at http://tomshardware.co.uk/index.html
this site list reviews on all modern cpu's and graphics cards. As a rule of thumb, Intel cope with number chrunching (video encoding etc) better than AMD, however, AMD have squarely gone for the home market and have biased their chips to improved graphics response, so therefore if you are using a CAD package you should really consider an AMD for graphics, but for 3d modelling etc Intel should fare better.

Hope this helps

Either - but I'd personally spend the value of the INTEL and buy an AMD - more 'bang for your buck'.

A fast processor is worth nothing without the rest of the components being capable. 1Gb of RAM as a bare minimum, as well as a 256 or 512Mb graphics card.

Intel is much faster by standard... That's why Mac is finally going to use Intel instead of just AMD... AMD will never be able to compete with Intel!!!

If you want to do CAD I would seriously consider a MAC they are better equipped for that sort of thing!!

GO WITH AMD's SOCKET 939 SEMPRON (COMING OUT SOON)....then u can upgrade later to a dual core need be...! Just make sure the motherboard will support the dual core proc. PLUS socket 939 is a tested (for years now) socket/platform and AMD's socket AM2 does not give u much more in the way of performance.

Either Sempron socket (754, 939, AM2) will enable (or already includes the 64 bit instruction set) a 64 bit upgrade.

I would choose AMD everytime, but thats just personal preference based on my own experience.
