Servers, as their name hints, are there to provide some service. Network, e-mail, database, web-site, proxy, whatever, they each have their purpose - and the name comes from the service they provide.

There are different kinds of servers
Application server-Server which is dedicated to run software applications.
Database server, provides database services
File server, provides file services
Client-server, a software architecture that separates "server" functions from "client" functions
The X Server part of the X Window System
Peer-to-peer, a network of computers running as both clients and servers

servers r also computers but r more powerful .these r used when there is a networking.It is the main computer which handles all other computers in the network.servers have all information about thier clients and maintain the main database
so that in case of failure of any client, the information can be collected from servers easily.
