The usual given history is that the Klu Klux Klan was formed as an exclusive white supremacy group, and the early members decided to base their name on a Classical Greek title (as college fraternities still do).

Since the idea of the Clan was to keep (non-white) people out they decided to name their group The Circle.

The Ancient Greek word for a circle was 'kuklos'. So they became the Kuklos Clan.

Sadly since they were all hicks no-one understood the new name, nor the reason for it - indeed the poor boys could hardly spel. In almost no time the proud Kuklos Clan became the Klu Kluz Klan - which is easier to say, and easier to remember.

Especially for Klutzes.

I found this under WIKIPEDIA:

The name was constructed by combining the Greek "kyklos" (circle) with "clan."[3] The founders spelled Clan with a K to give the name of the organization more flair through alliteration. It was at first a humorous social club centering on practical jokes and hazing rituals.[4] The Ku Klux Klan was, in its inception, a social club for young men seeking amusement and entertainment. Members would make midnight raids on the town of Pulaski dressed in elaborate costumes consisting of bedsheets or masks pretending to be ghosts or demons in order to frighten or amuse townspeople.

I read somewhere that the name comes from the Greek word "kuklos", meaning "circle". After the Civil War, the Klan was founded as a club for Confederate veterans, which I would guess was a very close-knit circle of members.

I heard hears ago that the entire phrase ku-klux-clan was supposed to sound like the cocking of a lever-action rifle.

Isn't it ironic that they derive their own name from a race that is not part of the "superior" just another example of how ignorance truly is bliss.....
