Berlin was the capital of the German Empire before the wars. When Germany was divided into East and West Germany, Berlin was also divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. The Wall completely surrounded West Berlin and a minefield and no-man's land was spaced in between the walls. There were also barbed wire and security guards patrolling the border. The most famous crossing between the two Berlins was Checkpoint Charlie. It was the American-controlled checkpoint in the Wall. Since West Berlin was completely surrounded by East Germany, The capital of West Germany was moved to Bonn, on the Rhine River, until Germany reunited.

America, France and Britain controlled 3 out of 4 parts of the city. The Russians controlled 1 part. They split it because it was the capital
