Negative aspects of the south? I'm not sure it even did a good job portraying ANY aspects of American life in the 60's.
It's a Hollywood movie!

What that movie portrayed was a 60's view of racial prejudice. Definately in the South it was extreme, but it was not unique in the US. I live in California, and some of the comments the "extra" actors mouths in the movie, my parents said too.
It is easy to target the south, but the problem was nationwide.
