India became a nation during and after World War 2. During the 30s, Japanese intelligence funded and provided weapons to the Indian National Army and the Indian National Congress, leading to the country's emancipation from British colonial rule. This is open to debate because the Indian National Army was by no means spread out across the entire Indian subcontinent, and there were in fact certain Royalist Indians who fought against the Japanese. However, in terms of a modern nation being defined as such by its national defense, this occured between the 30s and 50s when the British Empire crumbled in South Asia, and when the National Congress was formed in unison with the National Army.

nation - a large group of people organised under a single government.

nationalism - devotion to ones nation, at the expense of international goals.

india, in my opinion realy became a nation when it ceased to be a british colony. on august 15 1947. however, as with all questions of nationhood, there will be various strands of history that do not fit such a simplistic reasoning.
