Many people follow the diesel and ignore petrol thinking they're saving more! As a matter of fact, this could be costly!
They are not aware of other factors such as higher fuel bills and taxes!
Drivers must check their mileages! One must observe the fuel that serves best based on outcome and not consumptions!
Example: Cars that are doing around or less than 10,000 miles/year will observe that petrol is cheaper to them.
And true, in UK price of diesel was 88.3p per liter in May while the price of petrol in that same period was 84.3p/litre about a differential of 4% or so.
If you are asking this question to decide buying a new car you may wanna consider alternative fuels, but if you decide to buy a petrol or diesel car ask for details of all of the pollutants, not just CO2! After all, neither one of the two cars are really environmentally friendly

Mostly because when you refine a barrel of crude oil, you get more diesel than petrol, but there are some other factors. Different crudes contain different amounts of different fractions like kerosene, light stuff like avgas and diesel. So they sell at different prices. Here in NZ diesel is cheaper than petrol, but if you drive a diesel vehicle you have to pay a road tax for every km. you drive on top of that. You don't have to pay that tax on petrol. But it's still cheaper to drive a diesel car than a petrol one in NZ except when it needs servicing.Diesel mechanics are harder to find than petrol motor ones. I can fix a lot of things on my petrol car but I don't know anything about diesels, and I'd have to pay somebody a lot of money to fix one if I owned it.

It is only in India. The prices around the world are almost the same for Diesel & Petrol. In UK Diesel is more expensive.

The reason for this difference in India is the Government subsidises the desiel. This is done keeping our mass transport system & cargo movement ( which are dependent on diesel) in mind.

Well...simply...all other things being equal...it is the cost of refinement. Of course many factors come into play, such as current market value, transportation costs, storage costs, price competition, location of retail outlet, and on and on and on...
