It depends on where you're going for the flying Vs driving dilemna. If you're going to the South of France, which weather-wise will be much nicer you can get cheap flights from low cost airlines (£40 return). If you wanted to drive that distance, not only would you have the fuel and euro-tunnel charges etc, but also the stress of navigating in a foreign place and a day or two of your holiday travelling. But if you live in the south of england and want to go someonewhere in the north of France (i.e paris) then driving would probably be better.
My parents have two 6-borth static caravans in the South of France at a resort called Camping du Pylon which is in Biot not too far from Nice and Cannes, Monaco etc. There is an area for people to camp in tents and take touring caravans. The site is family orientated (no single sex groups allowed) there is a swimming pool and sport facilities. Nearby is a fun fair, Sea world, crazy golf and the sea is a 2 minute walk.
Carcasonne (south west france) is very nice and charming, I stayed at a small resort of gites (log cabins), there were sports facilities at the site and the area was lovely with modern and yet also oldy-worldy areas.
Hotels can be extorionately priced in certain parts, so if you're not able to find a camp site, have a look at gites. If you'd like more information please get in touch.

Hi
We went by euro tunnel for the first time in april. It was great so quick. The earlier you buy your ticket the cheaper it is as the prices go up nearer the time you want to go. We have been to Brittany which was quite nice but i think that the weather is the same as in Devon or Cornwall so the added expense to get there i think is a waste. We have also been to a place called Gien in the Loire Vally. This was really nice. Lots of parks for children and good bike rides but not much to do in the evening. We travelled by car and it did cost us a bit but if you fill your car with petrol in France then its cheaper than here but make sure its away from the ports as its quite expensive there. We have also been to Nice but i would recommend if you have small children then a couple of stop offs would be best as it takes a long time to get there. Also the weather is pretty much going to be hot in the South. All in all the eurotunnel is far better than a ferry, Campsites are cheap but other things over there are quite expensive.

A few years ago I went camping to France in Brittany. It was cheap to take a car on the ferry crossing. In newspapers they have offers on the ferry crossing taking a car so keep an eye out. The camp sites are dirt cheap and located everywhere. They are pretty much all the same and the standards are fairly decent. Enjoy

I think you would find "Chateau des Ormes" site (camping) near Combourg in Brittany great for your family. Not the cheapest but reasonably close to ferry port of St Malo. Drive must be cheapest because you need a car there anyway with the kids.
Also try Eurocamp, who arrange all in camping holidays.

A few years ago we went to St Malo - drove. It was a nightmare - boiling hot and then rained non stop for five days. We stayed in a Eurocamp tent which was lovely. My only problem was that you had to find a loo in the middle of the night - in the pouring rain. I think it is the luck of the draw, weatherwise. But I have to say, if I went back to St Malo, I'd fly.
