In my apartment, 16 floors above a Starbucks (most apartments in New York are above a Starbucks). Looking out the window, I see the horizon across the East River starting to get lighter, although it is still fairly dark out. Just light enough to see the outline of the Empire State Building. I'm hearing the news on NBC on my computer (XP Media Edition that has TV on the computer) while I multitask, and the occasional sound of a honking car, although rather infrequent, unlike during the day when I hear several each minute. A big truck just ran over the metal plate in the street below my apartment that covers a huge pothole that hasn't been repaired yet, causing a loud thump noise. I can also hear my cat kicking litter against the sides of the box in the bathroom. I can smell the faint smell of vanilla from a votive candle that is about to burn out; one of several dozen I got from IKEA 75% off after Christmas. Also the smell of fresh air coming in the window, still with the smell of rain in it, from the heavy thunderstorm we had last night, fortunately cooling the air down from an unbearable temperature and humidity level to a very pleasant temperature. Another thump from another truck. And the paperboy just dropped the New York Times in front of my neighbor's door, a few minutes earlier today than normal. My cat just jumped back up onto the bed, and looked at me and gave a soft meow, hoping that I'd get up and give him another can of cat food, even though he knows he only gets one in the evening. He must not be too hungry, or he would go eat some of the dry food in his dish. He just curled up for another nap.

I'm in my room. I hear the trickling water from the filter in my fish tank. I hear the air conditioning, and the hum of my computer. I also hear the soft tapping of the keyboard keys. I see a mass of books, magazines, and papers strewn around the room. ( I like to read.) I see my fish swimming around, and I see trees swaying in the wind through my bedroom window. I smell cold crisp air, Aramis cologne, and the surreal smell of the lonely late night.

I see the corner of two walls in my living room and the curtain over the window that faces the porch. I hear my boyfriend breathing while he sleeps, and I smell the smoke from my cigarette.
