If you have too much running on start-up it will really drag the speed of your computer down, down etc.
Getting rid of un-necessary programs just makes things more efficient and allows you to start them up when you want them!
A site that has a list of start up programs to help you decide which ones to disable using the msconfig application can really help try:
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/startup_applications/page1
But there are plenty of similar sites. Just remember to check what the program is supposed to do and if it is necessary to start up before you disable it !!
Best luck

Leave Services alone if you don't know what you are doing. Nothing there is gonna slow you down enough to matter but you can mess things up by turning off the wrong thing.
STARTUP = All the programs that start when you boot up your puter. Some things you need for sure such as your mouse, anti-virus etc. Items you don't need at your finger tips can be turned off. You can still access them by clicking on their start icon, they are not deleted. Keep track of anything you turn off in case you cause problems you can go back and turn them on again.

That could be anything, you should supply a list of what you have running and if you stop something vital you could crash your computer. You should ask a computer shop for advice or get a local computer whizz kid in to have a look. Good luck!

Services should be disabled in services. msc not msconfig. Here is a good guide as to what unnecessary services can be disabled or set to manual:

Uncheck some of those softwares you don't need in startup file but don't stop any of those system files. Your computer may not bootup at all afterward.

Leave "SYSTRAY", "SCANREG", "STIMON", and anything "POWER" ("PWR") etc. checked. You can turn most anything else on manually. Go to www.SpeedGuide.net for speed tweaks.
