Nope. To build engines of sufficient power, you need special materials, specially fabricated, which you won't find in a junkyard. Not to mention all of the electronic stuff needed. (You can get lots of surplus electronic gadgetry, but adapting it to control a rocket is a big deal.) Or, for that matter, the fuel.

junk yard rocket to go to the moon? not likely. You need good techonolgy to go to the moon as well as special materials that help the rocket resist extreme temperatures like that encountered when the space enters the earth's athmosphere. The material also has to be strong enough to resist forces (tensions) exerted externally. Besides that you need controlers, meaning the digital circuits (Chips) and programing to control such an complex machine, you won't find those in a junk yard. If that was possible, Nasa would be owning lots of junk yards or buying parts from there don't you think? Going to space is complicated and lots of factors have to be taken into account.

i think this project would fail because first of all what junk yard items are not new they are old and possibly very fragile.second you can only get rocket parts at special military junk yards or aka bone/grave yards for aircrafts and rockets. these part are all in good condition and from dismantled items, and the military doesnt give things out for free im sure u would need lots of money to buy and a reson for buying. And lastly how would you find a secure source of rocket fuel?

Wasn't there a television show depicting exactly this sometime in the late 70's early 80's? I can't remember the name of it, but the owner of the junkyard was none other than Andy Griffith! I think that's why I initially watched it! And it was good...took something that we thought only the government with their millions could do, and gave it a go through free enterprise!
OKAY...found it, it was called Salvage 1, and ran in 1979 (see my timing was just about on the nose!) The link is below...wonder if I can get it in Netflix? My daughter ought to enjoy this!

1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000! You're a dreamer........ Bad Dream! But keep dreamin"! We need people like you. This is why we got to the moon in the first place. But don't forget, we lost a lot more people in the dreaming process than we have in the doing process. Be smart and keep asking questions. Just get a little info before you try 'em out. A lot of college won't hurt either! And by the way, NASA will give you WAY too much to even forget the word "junkyard" if you have the right education.

There is a contest for who can privately build a ship that leaves the atmosphere. The prize is like $10 million. I belive the individual who has gotten closest has spent something like $25 million.
So I would say highly unlikely that someone could build a junkyard rocket to take a person to the moon. Not imposible, just highly unlikely.

Theoretically, your answer is "yes." However, that person (or, more likely, persons) would have to have knowledge of rocketry and associated engineering, astronomy, chemistry, geology, physics, computer programming, and a host of other sciences. It would be an ambitious project, to say the least. However, given the host of countries now involving themselves in space exploration, I think it's only a matter of time before some enterprising (and wealthy) individual gives it a shot. (BTW, I'm basing all this on the assumption that the "junkyard" concept is open to very liberal definition. :).

if you want to get to the moon with your rocket,
1) you will die for sure.
if you only want your rocket to get there, then
1) you'll need to make it big enough to carry enough fuel to get there
2) if it's big, you'll need a big reactor (not junk yard...)
3) even if you could piece everything together, you'll still have to aim true, and that's not an easy task.
4) i'm not even considering the "landing on the moon part"... even worse
by the way, where are you going to find 200 tons of explosive powder? (rocket boosters) and the 200-300 tons of ergol requiered to get there? (my figures are optimistic)

You stated "The Astronaut Farmer", did not you? I loved that action picture plenty, besides the undeniable fact that i got here across it surprisingly unbelievable. i think if someone quite knew their stuff, and chosen their "junk" with severe care, it would properly be executed. you'll not prefer to apply tanker autos and cement mixers, besides the undeniable fact that. Too heavy, and likely no longer ok. As contained in the action picture, the hardest section would likely be acquiring sufficient gas with out attracting the interest of position of foundation safe practices.

you could stick with Buddhist phylosophy, which claims that wherever you want, you can be. The only thing you must do is to want and think. It would save you time and energy, what do u think?
