I actually fell in quicksand once. Usually it does occur near watery areas. First off, I do not know anything about a bog, being a So Cal girl. From what I know, the area has to have major waterways. The water table, ( the area below the surface), and topical waterways are saturated.

Think about it. You look at a lake, creek, or river from the top. You see how it fills the areas, conforming to natural depressions . But there are fissures and cracks 5,10,15 feet below that surface that the water runs through. That water, if it has no where to go to, churns, like a washing machine. The ground far below becomes muddy, slushy.

The next element is the top side. Say it was a particularly wet season. Those waterways, will have areas that were usually high ground areas, now become muddy, and not drying out. So do you see it?

Ground 15 feet below is churning, and on the top side , the ground is not drying out . In my case, I was just running around a creek area, and took a step into a muddy area. before I knew it, I was chest deep in quicksand.

Luckily, the area wasn't that big , and I got to the edge, and pulled out. The reason the say don't fight it is because your kicking just adds to that churning below you.

Funny thing is, just this week, a whole family was rescued from the Santa Fe dam area by helicopter, from quicksand. The dad had a cell phone. This was 15 minutes east of downtown LA!

That's one of the better questions I've seen here. I'd forgotten about that. Back in the day, old tv programs made it look like sawdust floating on top of water, and the villian always fell into it at the right time. I'll be interested in reading the answers you get.
