I've asked questions before about American views on society, I cannot believe how many people are against such natural things as universal education, universal health care and housing for all, are you people crazy? seriously, when you have a look at Democracies like Australia, Sweden and Iceland where there is virtually no poverty, and governments are very generous to its citizens...how you you Americans compare these compassionate societies with countries like North Korea? seriously, how can you justify someone living on the street, or in misery and poverty and say America is a fair and just country???? Americans are very confusing

You are oversimplifying the situation in Australia. It does not have universal education and health care. Tertiary education in Australia has been user pays for a while now. Medicare does not fully cover everyone's health care costs. In addition, it is very difficult for the average Australian family to afford their own home. I'm sure I don't need to remind you of the poverty in remote Aboriginal communities. In some of these places the standard of health approaches that of Third World levels.

Does this make Australians less compassionate? Does that mean that Australia is a bad place to live? No, it just says that life isn't so nice and neat. There is no magic bullet that creates the perfect country. It requires hard work. I would imagine that every country struggles to create decent healthcare, education, etc. Whether it be Sweden, Iceland or the United States.

Americans are confusing. I’ve been an American all my life. Ya, the form of government may be democracy but America does things differently. Un like Sweden and Iceland, America needs to put up with a lot of crap. AKA (Being between Mexico and Canada). If you lived between Mex and Can you would care nothing but yourself too. The only thing that stops American’s from being complete jerks is the fact that France a thousand of miles away.
I can’t have compassion for some random guy, I need to put up with my own problems, like how to avoid an airplane running into the building I’m in right now.
Australia can live a normal life because the rest of the world didn't screw it over.

America has freed more people than any nation in history. We have advanced society more with technology and medical advancements than any other nation. To say we have no compassion is crazy.

If America is so bad, why do many people in Europe and Canada come to the US to have major surgeries? Due to our capitalist system we are able to provide a level of care and quality the rest of the world can not match. Sure we could have socialized medicine and education but it would lower the standards of our institutions.

Capitalism and open markets are not perfect. But socialism and income redistribution isn't either.

We can compare some nations of Europe to North Korea because so nations do nothing. What does Sweden do to bring security and peace to the world? Nothing. They sit back and watch staying neutral. Sometimes you have to take sides.

Confusing is a kind understatement. I served my country for 6 years before I realized that we are really mean people. What were doing now is actually better - ok not better - different than what we did to the indians. I was shocked and horrified to learn the truth. But on a larger scale; we can only change the world by changing ourself first.

dude, I agree with your point. However, I've been to Norway (a very rich country, right next to Sweden), and my mom grew up there. I would hate to live there. I don't care how messed up the U.S. is (and it is PRETTY EFFED UP! Just look at the tv ads! tells you everything right there), I find the U.S. is much more open than at least the Scandinavian country of Norway, which is right up there with Sweden. At least in the U.S., you can smile at someone and not be coldly stared at. LOL

I would like to see universal medical care and education, but the greedy doctors wouldn't make as much money, and the politicians who make the rules don't need it
